• Zinc borate is an inorganic compound, a borate of zinc. It is a white crystalline or amorphous powder insoluble in water.

• Zinc Borate contains water of hydration. When Zinc Borate is exposed to heat, it decomposes and gives out water. This is an irreversible and endothermic reaction. This property makes Zinc Borate an effective flame retardant.

Uses:

• Zinc Borate promotes the formation of a protective vitreous layer and of a strong char layer, thereby reducing the formation of toxic and irritant smoke during the fire.
•  Zinc Borate looses its water of hydration at temperatures above 290 deg C, this water liberated has a cooling effect on the flames and the endothermic reaction takes away energy from the fire.
•  Zinc Borate acts as a synergist in conjunction with halogenated flame retardants, and hence lower loading of halogenated flame retardant additives is required.
•  Zinc Borate also shows strong synergic effect with antimony trioxide (ATO). Infact, the presence of alumina trihydrate (ATH) enhances the synergic effect.
•  Zinc Borate improves resistance against electrical degradation: high anti-arcing and anti-tracking indexes
•  Zinc Borate is effective afterglow suppressant.
